UPDATE:

It looks like the server was compromised by a rootkit and we are currently doing an OS reload. Once that is complete, we will do a security audit and hardening of the server, and we will then begin restoring accounts. I will update this post periodically as time permits. Thank you for your patience.

We are almost finished with the OS restore. Once that is complete, we will need to do a security audit and then hardened the server to prevent a repeat of this morning’s compromised. The majority of accounts should be back online and active by tomorrow morning. If for some reason you cannot wait till tomorrow to use your account then please us know by filling out a support ticket at http://www.emwd.com/support/ and let us know the domain name of your account and we will move it to another server. Again we apologize for the inconvenience and we appreciate your patience.

UPDATE:

We are restoring accounts now. Due to the size of some of the mailman archives on the server, the restore process is taking longer than anticipated but we are making progress. I will update this ticket when all accounts have been restored.

Zen Cart Security Vulnerability Alert + Patch

Please pardon this mass email. If you are running a Zen Cart store, it’s important that you read this message and take action immediately.

A vulnerability has been discovered in the admin section of v1.3.8 (and previous versions). To take advantage of this vulnerability any attacker must know the URL of your admin section. As our security recommendations point out, you should change the folder that your admin resides in as soon as you  installed Zen Cart.

Soholaunch is one of the online web site builders we offer with our web hosting services. We just received the following security notification from the developers:

Soholaunch would like you to know about a recently discovered security vulnerability affecting Soholaunch Pro Edition Website Builder for Business (all versions prior to v4.9.3 r20).

Updating to the latest build of Soholaunch Pro Edition v4.9.3 r21 will lock-down this vulnerability.  You can update your site using Soholaunch’s built-in Update feature found in the Webmaster Menu by clicking the Software Updates button.
To fix the vulnerability, do one of these 2 things…

1. Soholaunch encourages customers to update to the latest version (v4.9.3 r21) through Pro Edition’s built-in software updates feature. *recommended
2. Alternatively, you can apply the security fix manualy. To do this, download this file and follow the instructions in the readme.txt file.
   

We encourage everyone who is using soholaunch to check the version of their installation and if need be, follow the above directions to upgrade.

Looks like EMWD receives our 15 minute of fame today. Have a great weekend!

We experienced some technical issues related to the monthly password reminder function of the mailman server on server1.emwd.com this morning. This is one of our primary mailman hosting servers. Due to these issues, there is currently a fairly large queue of outgoing messages. We believe we have the issues resolved, however Mailman is currently working through these queued up messages and therefore you may see some delays this morning in regards to messages sent to your lists. We apologize for this inconvenience and we appreciate your patience.

We will be turning off register_globals on host8.emwd.com on Saturday, 28 Mar at 9am. Register_globals has long been considered a security risk by the hosting industry and hosting providers are discouraged from enabling them. The problem however is many users are still using old software that requires register_globals to be enabled.

To address this problem, register_globals can be enabled on an account level basis via the use of a php.ini file. Just create the php.ini file with the following line in it:

register_globals = On

You will need to place this file in any directory that contains scripts that requires register_globals.

However this is still only a temporary correction. The PHP development group is dropping register_globals from its upcoming release of PHP 6. So the handwriting is on the wall. If you have scripts that requires register_globals then please either upgrade the script to the latest version or find a more secure replacement.

We will be implementing this change on the rest of our servers in the very near future. We will make future blog announcements for additional servers.

We will be installing a larger backup drive on host8.emwd.com tonight at 11am EST. We estimate the server will be down for 15-30 minutes. We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause.

CrossLoop is a tool that we have been using for a couple of years now. It is an utility that allows us to connect to a client’s computer for the purpose of troubleshooting/assisting the client with a support problem that is related to our services.

This utility is easy to install and can be downloaded for free from http://www.crossloop.com. Once the utility is installed, open it up, click on the Share tab, then either call us and give us your access code, or you can send it to us via e-mail/instant messaging. You will then receive a notification that our support team is trying to connect to your computer, just click allow and that is it. The connection is secure and you can disconnect the connection session at any time.

This is tool is very useful for our less technically savvy clients and we have been told by clients on numerous occasions on how easy it was for us to just log in to their computer and fix the problem for them.

We recommend our clients download this utility and keep it installed on their computer in case they need us to access their computer to help them with an EMWD related problem.
